Imagine my (pleasant) surprise when I opened up the paper on Saturday morning and found this guy's package in my face.
Nick D'Arcy is an Australian swimmer bound for the Olympics, on the cover of Good Weekend, the supplement to the broadsheet Sydney Morning Herald. A few weeks short of the Games, any swimmer could have graced the cover of the newspaper's magazine, so why is Nick newsworthy now? And why are his broad shoulders, solid pecs and impressive bulge in Speedos on my mind today? Business as usual then.
In a nutshell, what happened to D'Arcy is this: In 2008, D'Arcy beat the crap out of breaststroke champ Simon Cowley. His face was smashed so badly, he had to undergo face reconstruction surgery. D'Arcy was dropped from the Beijing squad in 2008 and was ordered to pay more than $370,000 in damages and costs. Four years later, D'Arcy is back in the headlines as he has made the Olympic team and is a serious contender for a medal at the London Games.
And you know what the really shameful thing is? Given half a chance, I'd still try to get a leg over Nick, anger management issues and all.
