Oddly Familiar: When new loves look like the old loves

In an old episode of Friends, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) introduces her new fling to the gang. Thing is, the new guy bares more than a passing resemblance to her ex. Her new boy is called Russ. Her ex is called Ross. You know where I'm going with this.

Why do some of us pick partners that seem to look a little like our exes? Can we just boil this down to having a type? We may like the tall,  dark and handsome kind. Maybe all our boyfriends are tall, dark, and handsome (I should be so lucky). Or can we delve  little deeper? Maybe our ex is lodged somewhere so deep in our hearts, whether we know it or not, the next cab with the light on that resembles our favourite ride, even a little, is the one we want to take home. The love of our lives? Or is it simply a case of having a type?

Old love: Johnny Depp and Kate Moss

The most rock'n'roll relationship of them all with neither party being a rock star. Johnny and Kate have to be my favourite couple of the '90s. Maybe ever. These were the guys who took baths in the most expensive champagne on the planet and completely trashed their hotel rooms. They may have been soul mates, but it doesn't mean they were good for each other. Their completely destructive relationship meant these guys could only weather the storm for a few short years. It was fun while it lasted. What would we have called Johnny and Kate in the '90s? MoJo?

New love: Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis

I've always kind of thought Vanessa Paradis was a poor man's Kate Moss. They met only a year or so after MoJo broke up. Vanessa offered Johnny a bit of stability he probably needed and that Kate just wasn't ready to provide back then.

 Old love: Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz

Matthew said Penelope was a vegetarian 'until she ate meat off my grill" #jizz. The hunky, blond Texan and the sexy little Hispanic goddess. Both would have had fiery tempers. Can you imagine these guys fighting?

New love: Matthew McConaughey and Camilla Alves

I miss Matthew and Penelope together. Matthew and Penelope 2.0 got hitched in 2007.

Old love: Kylie and Olivier Martinez

"Love rat" is just another word for "manwhore", isn't it?

New love: Kylie and Andres Velencoso Segura
